But Khira knew Tiahna and Khira was afraid. Pensive, Darkchild walked the stone floor It was long before he slipped into his bed, longer still before he slept. Twin images came to him as he dreamed: Tiahna dark against the glowing stone and Khira graven pale at the window. For the first time, dreaming, he felt something that might be fear—fear that he would leave Khira despite his every promise—and he moaned in his sleep.

The next day the palace seemed caught in vacuum. Its stalklit halls were silent, the very stones like living creatures, their tongues muted in anticipation. Stems of stalklamp took life, dipping down into the chill silence. Khira woke with the memory of harsh words and slipped from her bed to find Darkchild.
